Finding What Was Lost: Saint Anthony and the Tender Power of Prayer

Saint Anthony of Padua is one of the most beloved saints in the Church’s calendar—and not just for his famous intercessions when we lose our keys (or toys, or shoes, or our minds). Behind his popular reputation lies a deep, prayerful, and tender-hearted man whose life continues to inspire families and children toward Jesus.

Born in Lisbon in 1195, Anthony was a gifted preacher, a devoted Franciscan, and a man full of compassion. He lived during a time of great social upheaval, but he responded not with fear, but with radical trust in God. He studied theology deeply, but always preached in a way the simplest people could understand. His sermons were full of Scripture, humility, and love—qualities that make him an ideal model for little hearts learning to grow in faith.

So why do we ask for his help in finding things? The story goes that a novice borrowed (without asking) Anthony’s treasured book of Psalms. When Anthony prayed for its return, the novice was moved to repentance and brought it back. Over time, stories of his powerful intercession grew—and with them, his reputation as the go-to saint for lost items.

But Anthony helps us recover far more than lost objects. He helps us recover our peace. Our focus. Our trust. And most importantly, our relationship with Jesus.

Ways to Celebrate St. Anthony with Kids:

  • Have a treasure hunt: Teach your children that St. Anthony helps us find not just objects, but spiritual treasures.
  • Say a simple prayer: "St. Anthony, help me find Jesus when I feel lost."
  • Tell his story: Share the tale of his stolen Psalter and how he forgave the novice who returned it.
  • Practice acts of kindness: St. Anthony cared for the poor. Make a small donation or pack a snack bag for someone in need.

This June 13, bring a little more tenderness into your home. Let St. Anthony be a guide for your children in learning how prayer brings us close to Jesus. And don’t be surprised if that missing puzzle piece shows up too.
