The Triduum at Home: A Simple Way to Stay Close

The Triduum at Home: A Simple Way to Stay Close

The Triduum—Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday—are the most important days of the Church year.

They can also feel like a lot.

There’s a desire to enter in, to make them meaningful, to not miss it… and at the same time, real life is still happening. Meals still need to be made. Kids still need you. The house is still what it is.

So instead of trying to do everything, think of this as a way to stay close in small, doable ways.

Not perfectly. Just intentionally.

Holy Thursday: Remember How He Loved

Holy Thursday is about the Last Supper and the way Jesus chose to love—through service and self-gift.

At home, this doesn’t need to be elaborate.

You can:

  • Light a candle at dinner
  • Slow the meal down just a bit
  • Say one simple sentence: “Tonight we remember how Jesus loved and served.”

If it feels natural, you could do a small act of service for someone in your family—something quiet and intentional.

The goal isn’t to recreate the whole night. It’s just to notice it.

Good Friday: Let It Be Quiet

Good Friday should feel different.

Not dramatic. Just quieter.

You might:

  • Turn off music or background noise for a while
  • Dim the lights in the afternoon
  • Place a crucifix somewhere visible

And then pause.

Even a minute is enough.

You could say: “Today we remember what Jesus did for us,” and leave it there.

You don’t need a long explanation. The tone of the day will speak for itself.

Holy Saturday: Don’t Rush It

Holy Saturday is the in-between day.

Nothing is happening yet. There’s no resolution. Just waiting.

It’s easy to skip over this and jump straight to Easter, especially when you’re preparing for the next day.

But there’s something important about not rushing it.

Let the day feel normal, but a little more aware. A little more still.

You might not say much at all. That’s okay.

This Is Enough

You don’t need a full plan.
You don’t need to do every tradition.

If you:

  • light a candle
  • pause for a moment
  • say one simple truth out loud

you are already entering into these days.

That’s what matters.

A Simple Prayer

Jesus,
help us stay close to You in these days.
In what we do and in what we don’t do,
keep our hearts with You.
Amen.
