You Don’t Have to Entertain Your Kids All Summer
Every summer, it feels like there’s pressure to make childhood magical.
We see bucket lists, packed schedules, expensive camps, day trips, crafts, sensory bins, and all the “core memory” moments people are creating online. And while those things can absolutely be fun, they can also make moms feel like they’re failing if every day at home feels… ordinary.
But honestly, kids do not need nonstop entertainment to have a good summer.
Some of the best parts of childhood are actually pretty simple. Playing outside until dinner. Watching a movie in pajamas on a random weekday. Helping make popsicles in the kitchen. Getting bored enough to make up a game with siblings. Going on evening walks. Reading books together before bed.
As Catholic moms, I think it’s important to remember that there is real value in slow, ordinary life.
We don’t always have to be producing, planning, or performing. Rest matters. Quiet matters. Family rhythms matter.
Summer can be a chance to slow down a little and reconnect with the things that actually make a home feel peaceful.
That might mean:
- More time outside
- More family dinners
- More trips to the library
- More praying together at bedtime
- More unstructured play
- Less rushing from activity to activity
Kids don’t need a parent who turns every day into a Pinterest-worthy event. They need love, consistency, attention, and space to just be children.
So if you’ve been feeling behind because your summer isn’t packed full, this is your reminder that you are allowed to slow down.
A simple summer can still be a really good one.
